Participation
There are various ways of participating in the OLMUN Conference:
1. Delegate
Each year, OLMUN welcomes several hundret delegates, thus high school students, from more than 10 countries. As a delegate you represent one of the United Nations’ member states, an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), such as Greenpeace or Amnesty International, or an Official Observer (OO), such as the Holy See or the Palestinian National Authority.
Usually, you will form a delegation along with other students from your school. Being in the same delegation means representing the same nation – but of course in different committees. OLMUN 2010 will feature the following committees and councils:
- The General Assembly’s Third Committee (GA3rd)
- The General Assembly’s Fourth Committee (GA4th)
- The Human Rights Council (HRC)
- The Economic and Social Council (EcoSoc)
- The United Nations Environment Programme Governing Council (UNEP GC)
- The United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT GC)
- The United Nations Security Council (SC)
- The Special Conference (SpC)
In order to be succesfull in achieving the aims of your nation, you should research your contries positions on the issue that is being discussed in your committee. After you have done that, you might like to write a few clauses, or even a whole resolution, on how your nation would like to pursue its goals in your committee.
Furthermore, one of the delegates of each delegation will need to present an opening speech to the General Assembly during the opening ceremony of OLMUN. However, as many delegates like to present an opening speech, most committee chairs and presidents will invite you to do so on the first day of committee sessions, right before the lobbying process starts.
During the the lobbying process, you wil try to form alliances with other delegates that share the same ideas as you on how to deal with your committee’s issue. You will try to merge your resolutions and clauses with those the other delegates have prepared and eventually come to an agreement.
On the last day of you committee’s session, you will defend your resolutions in formal debate, with the final goal of passing it.
